Fire restriction, heat warning, and air quality advisory in effect for Airdrie

AIRDRIE, AB – Due to the current and forecasted hot and dry weather conditions, a fire restriction was issued July 24, 2024, for the City of Airdrie.

Environment Canada has also issued a heat warning and an air quality advisory for Airdrie. Residents seeking a place to cool down during extreme heat or poor air quality conditions are welcome to drop into the Airdrie Public Library or Genesis Place during their regular operating hours. Residents can find more information on heat warnings and air quality alerts on the City of Airdrie website.

The fire restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve. While campfires are currently allowed, they may be restricted or banned in the coming days, dependent on conditions.

Under these fire restrictions:

  • All existing fire permits are suspended
  • No new fire permits will be issued until conditions improve

Prohibited:

  • Any burning without a valid fire permit
  • Use of farm burning barrels
  • Incinerator fires
  • Consumer fireworks

Allowed:

  • Use of residential firepits/wood campfires that follow the guidelines below*
  • Use of natural gas or propane fire pits that are CSA approved or ULC certified
  • Use of natural gas, propane or electric stoves, barbecues, and smokers that are CSA approved or ULC certified.
  • Use of solid fuelled barbeque appliances, where the primary source of fuel consists of charcoal, briquettes, or wood
  • Use of catalytic or infrared style heaters that are CSA approved or ULC certified
  • Approved fires contained in industrial facilities or sites (energy, forestry or agricultural)
