Airdrie residents, businesses and community groups invited to shape the City’s future through essential plan updates

For immediate release

Airdrie, AB, Sept. 9 — The City of Airdrie is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to help shape the future of our City through an online survey that will contribute to the updates of the Airdrie City Plan.

The Airdrie of today is a direct result of previous guiding documents, like the Airdrie City Plan, which has been crucial in shaping our city’s development. As we move forward, the City is once again asking for input to ensure that our plans align with the needs and aspirations of the community.

“As Airdrie continues to grow within the Calgary Metropolitan Region, these updates are crucial to ensuring our city remains vibrant, sustainable and inclusive,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “This plan will guide Airdrie’s development over the next 30 years, addressing key areas like housing, transportation, environmental protection and more.”

"The Airdrie City Plan has helped our City reach many of its goals since its last update in 2014, but now it’s time to look ahead," said Jordan Furness, Team Leader, Policy Planning. "Airdrie has been identified as a preferred growth area in the region. We need input from residents, business owners and community groups to ensure these plans reflect the community’s needs and aspirations. Whether your interest lies in housing, transportation, or environmental stewardship, your input is vital in helping us create a sustainable and resilient Airdrie for future generations."

The updated City Plan will focus on four key areas and we’re seeking feedback on how we progress in these categories:

  • Greening as we grow: Protecting natural areas, ensuring a sustainable water supply and reducing emissions.
  • Vibrant spaces and places: Investing in diverse, affordable housing near schools, parks and workplaces.
  • Social and economic prosperity: Attracting businesses, supporting downtown revitalization, and fostering arts, culture and recreation.
  • Connection and mobility: Building a complete transportation network that supports walking, cycling, transit and driving.

In addition, we want feedback about how we can better address the opportunities outlined in the regional plan, particularly in fostering diversity and sustainability.

Visit involve.airdrie.ca/CityPlan to take the survey until Sept. 27.

About the AirdrieONE Sustainability Plan and Airdrie City Plan
The new iteration of the City Plan will amalgamate the AirdrieONE Sustainability Plan, which was first approved in 2012 as a long-term vision for the city’s environmental, social, cultural and economic development. The Airdrie City Plan, approved in 2014, outlines the policies and strategies for managing growth and development in the city. Together, these plans ensure that Airdrie continues to thrive as a dynamic, livable community.
