City of Airdrie shares extreme cold weather supports and resources

November 26, 2024 - For immediate release

AIRDRIE, AB – The City of Airdrie is sharing tips on how to stay warm this winter season and reminding residents of their access to extreme cold weather supports and resources in preparation for future extreme cold weather events.

“As the temperatures continue to drop, residents experiencing vulnerability are encouraged to utilize these supports and resources” says Angela Angel, Social Planner with the City of Airdrie. “We would like to thank the Extreme Weather Action Collective, a group of local service providers, for their support as we plan for extreme cold weather events throughout the winter season.”

Stay safe and protect your loved ones during extreme cold weather events with the following safety tips:

  • Stay indoors when possible. If venturing outside dress in warm, windproof layers. Watch for signs of frostbite, which can occur in less than 10 minutes in extreme cold.
  • If you have to travel by vehicle, know your route ahead of time, bring outdoor winter clothing and boots, and have a full tank of gas plus a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • Take precautions when working outside; do not over-exert yourself. Sweating can lead to hypothermia; which can be fatal.
  • Make sure your pets have warm shelter, food and accessible water during a cold snap.
