Based in Surrey, B.C, Metal Building Group (MBG) provides metal building solutions to Western Canada and is making significant strides by expanding its business in Alberta.
Established in 2007 by brothers Jonathan and Vince Triance with their father, Steve, and partner, Trent Warkentin, MBG has been operating in the Airdrie area since the early 2000s. The family-owned company, has further invested in Airdrie by opening an office in 2022, leveraging local talent to meet construction demands in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
"Airdrie was a natural choice for us because our people were already here," said Jon, noting the “pro-business” city has been easy to work with.
Established in 2007 under current ownership, MBG has a history dating back to 1981, initially focusing on the Greater Vancouver area. Over the years, the company has grown from a specialty subcontractor to a full-service general contractor, offering design-build turnkey solutions to clients and leasing opportunities in its portfolio of metal buildings.
Jon highlighted the advantages of Airdrie, noting its affordability, young and growing demographic, proximity to the airport and other amenities.
"[Airdrie] has all the big city stuff and proximity to the airport…but still has that small town feel," said Jon, emphasizing the community's appeal to their workforce.
Expanding Scope and Community Involvement
MBG has evolved significantly, handling everything from architectural renderings to the final construction of various projects. This includes industrial buildings, mining projects, and their own recent development that is home to a new warehouse for the Airdrie Food Bank.
The ownership team is well-rounded. Jon brings his background in finance and marketing, Vince brings over 25 years of steel construction experience and Warkentin has a similar depth of design, estimating and project management experience. Steve has retired from full-time work but still offers his mentorship and consultation.
The local office employs five people and up to 50 more subcontractors depending on projects, such as the 120,000 square-foot maintenance and warehouse building for Teck Resources in Sparwood, B.C. that is nearing completion.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, MBG aims to further establish itself as a key player in Airdrie's growth. Jon said they intend to grow Airdrie from a five-person team to 10-15-person team allowing them to grow their project base in Airdrie, surpassing their current Vancouver projects.
With its steady growth and local focus, Metal Building Group is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Airdrie’s industrial landscape for years to come.
