FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 18, 2025, Airdrie, AB – Airdrie residents now have access to a new financial tool to make energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades easier with the launch of the City’s Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP).
“This is an exciting opportunity,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “Calgary and Edmonton have already introduced this program, and it aligns with Council’s focus on environmental protection and supporting residents in adopting sustainable practices.”
CEIP offers low-interest financing (2.75 per cent fixed rate) from the City, with repayment collected through property tax bills over up to 25 years, depending on the lifespan of the improvement. Participants can repay the loan in full anytime without penalty and the financing is transferable to the next owner if the property is sold.
Homeowners must install eligible upgrades costing a minimum of $5,000 to qualify. The maximum eligible cost per property is $50,000, and the annual Clean Energy Improvement Tax cannot exceed the property’s annual municipal tax levy.
“Up-front costs are consistently seen as a barrier to installing energy-efficient upgrades and Airdrie CEIP addresses this barrier head-on,” said Joad Clement, Municipal Energy Advisor. “The loan is tied to the property, not the owner. If you sell your home, the cost stays with the property—not you—while the new owners benefit from the savings. Repayment terms are aligned with the useful life of the upgrades, which helps homeowners think about the upgrade’s long-term value.”
CEIP aims to create a climate-resilient community and reduce energy costs. Eligible projects include upgrades to light fixtures, windows, doors, solar panels, wall and attic insulation, tankless water heaters, furnaces, heat pumps and more.
Local contractors specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy are encouraged to apply to be listed as qualified contractors at ceip.abmunics.ca.
CEIP is administered by Alberta Municipalities in partnership with the City of Airdrie. Alberta Municipalities is a not-for-profit association representing Alberta’s 265 municipalities.
To participate, review the program terms and conditions and submit a pre-qualification application at myceip.ca/Airdrie.
